According to Tina Forsyth, the author of Becoming an Online Business Manager, the official definition of an Online Business Manager (OBM) is:
An OBM isn’t a virtual assistant who performs tasks. He or she is a professional business manager who runs the company’s daily operations to give the owner energy and time to focus on strategic growth. The OBM gives the owner permission to be the Visionary and serve her clients, plan the company’s growth and future, and use her gifts to their fullest potential.
The OBM keeps all the balls in the air as the Integrator of the business. Gino Wickman and Mark C. Winters first defined the Integrator role in their book, Rocket Fuel: The One Essential Combination that Will Get You More of What You Want from Your Business. The Integrator harmoniously combines the major functions of the business (sales, marketing, operations, and finance), runs the organization, and manages day-to-day issues. This role is literally the glue that holds the people, processes, systems, and strategy of the company together.

Let me start by saying that I am well aware of the confusion currently in the marketplace with the rise of the Online Business Manager role vs Virtual Assistant role. There are many that call themselves Online Business Managers.
There is a huge difference in the level of responsibilities and skills needed to manage a growing business in the two critical roles.
Both roles are needed in order to support the business owner in the growth and sustainability of her business. My goal is that the chart below helps to bring clarity these roles so that you can make informed decisions regarding your support needs.
Online Business Manager
The focus of the Online Business Manager is on “management”. OBM’s are hired to keep an eye on the big picture and to manage all the pieces (projects, team members, operations, expenses) to ensure that all projects are getting completed on time and on budget.
The focus of the Virtual Assistant is on “doing”. VAs are hired to performed specific tasks (i.e.: customer service, shopping cart maintenance, etc.) or complete specific projects (i.e. set up a new member area or blog) and are the ones actually doing the work.
Measures of Success
Everyone’s tasks and projects are being completed and delivered in a timely fashion. The team is happy and motivated. Systems are running smoothly and efficiently. New revenue is being generated. Business owner has the time and focus to lead the company’s direction and strategize its future.
VA’s own tasks and projects are being completed and delivered in a timely way.
Level of Responsibility
OBM’s are responsible for the success and smooth functioning of the entire business (as outlined above) – not just own their own individual work.
VAs are responsible for their own individual work.
Number of Clients
Due to the level of responsibility that OBM’s have with each client, an Online Business Manager can only effectively work with 2-3 clients at a time in this capacity.
VAs typically work with 5-10 clients, give or take a few either way depending on the workload of each client.
Why Business Owners Want to Hire...
Business owner want to hire an OBM when they’ve grown the business as far as they can being the “only one in charge’. Usually around the early to mid 6-figure range a business owner becomes tapped-out and simply can’t (and doesn’t want to) be the one who is managing the day-to-day activities of the business. They need a trusted someone who can step into this role and take these management tasks off their plate.
Business owners hire VAs to do the various tasks and projects they need completed in their business. Most will hire in the very early stages of their business (help set up websites, shopping carts, etc.) and will also need ongoing support of VAs long term as the business grows.

No, the value that I bring to your business lies in my ability to stay completely focused on and managing all the activities and resources that will accomplish the goals that we agree are needed to grow you business.
I have a great deal of experience and skill in many of the technical and administrative skills need to run an online business which makes me a valuable asset as a manager. I know what needs to be done and done properly and have been known to roll up my sleeves when needed to meet a deadline.
I would be happy to recommend some folks and other virtual assistant resources for you. Click here to shoot me an email.
Focus on expertise!
I deliver purely focused online business management services to my high level clients.
You and your business must be ready to take the step of hiring a Second-in-Command.
There is a huge difference between being really good at managing and executing tasks and managing a business.
I won't be able to deliver on my promises to you if my time and energy is depleted from managing and executing. That's the team's role.
Your role is to be the leader and CEO, mine is to manage the business and lead the team, and team's role is to execute on projects and tasks delegated to them.
HONEST MOMENT: Yes, I've tried to be and do everything for clients in the early stages of my business. I spent over 25 years in corporate work environments before working with clients online. I had a built in tendency to over-deliver.
I'm here to tell you those times were precious lessons learned. It's a recipe for my own burnout and disappointment to results.
I only work with 1-2 exclusive clients at this level annually. You have my full attention and focus.
I manage your business to create the fastest and highest return on investment for you and help you build a scalable business.
The tasks that you would delegating to me would be those management tasks that you've been hanging onto and is eating up your time, energy and focus in the following areas of your business.
Keeping the day-to-day operations on track.
Making sure that things happen on time and on budget.
Recruiting, hiring, supervising, training and termination, if required.
There is a multitude of management tasks that you can get off your plate now by delegating to your Online Business Manager. Most business owners do not even realize how much time they are spending every week on management tasks that keep them buried in the day-to-day of their business. Those tasks are critical to the growth and sustainability, but now that your business has grown, the best possible use of your time is spending your day in the role of CEO and Visionary of your business - on higher level tasks that will bring new revenue and growth to the business. You will always need a team to implement your ideas and strategies, but your team led by your Online Business Manager needs you to continue to grow the business with new ideas and strategies.
I would not be the best fit for you.
If you are in the start up phase of your business you do not have enough business or revenue yet to hire an Online Business Manager.
I partner with women entrepreneurs whose proven business model is generating at least $30,000 a month.
At this stage you will want to focus on support for your business that is specific in nature such as virtual assistants who are experts at executing tasks that you give them such as setting up shopping cart, websites, etc.
I know that some Online Business Management models do provide that service, but I do not.
My focus is on building a strong resources and platform for my clients to grow revenue and be a sustainable business. No doubt, you’ve heard the commonly known adage, “don’t put all your eggs in basket”. My philosophy is that your human business resources should all have a direct allegiance to the business owner. I will manage recruit, hire, train and manage the team, but the business owner pays them. The agreement is with the client company, not the business manager. If anything were to happen that unsettled the Business Owner/Business Manager relationship the stability of your business would most likely be threatened if the allegiance of the team was to my company. The continuous goal is to build a business that anyone can step out of the business without serious impact to the business. I do have extensive resources and connections to fill a temporary work order, if needed.
Since, I work with clients who have already accomplished multiple 6-7 figure businesses the likelihood that they do not already have a team is small. If and when the team needs to expand then I will be the one to manage that process. I will handle the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising and termination of assignment, if required. I will build the team that we need to get stuff done!
You may not need me right now. Heck, you may not need me ever!
Every business owner needs people to help her grow at different stages of business. Some may never want to grow their business to the level where a Second-in-Command is needed to grow into a bigger vision.
The greatest external motivator for you will be the overwhelming stress that comes from a growing business and shrinking time to do everything on your own.
Yes, no doubt, you could probably continue to do everything on your own, but at what cost? The fact that you are reading this webpage right now is most likely because you are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed and over-stressed leaving the business stuck in its ability to grow any further unless some important leadership decisions are made.
It's time to decide.
Only you know which direction you want your business to go.
I'm in your corner what matter what decision you make. I just want you to be happy and your dreams come true. If I can help it will be my honor.
Yes, I am absolutely sure that you are extremely busy and feeling overwhelmed which is why are considering an Online Business Manager. The first thing we will do together is to begin transferring management tasks and concerns over to me. You will immediately begin feeling some freedom to attend to higher level tasks in your business.
It stands to reason that in the beginning of our time of working together that you and I will communicate more often. I will need to learn your business, resources, what needs to be accomplished, issues – internal and external, that needs to be resolved and more. I have systems in place that will be activated immediately upon our agreement to work together which will reduce the amount of your time as much as possible. As time passes our communications will fall into a natural cycle of weekly status calls, monthly Big Picture meetings, quarterly “In Sync” meetings and annual planning meetings.
Regarding time involved before you start seeing results. The answer to this question will vary on what we have determined are the goals that you want to accomplish. One of the most valuable and immediate results and reasons for hiring an Online Business Manager lies in face that you will gain hours back into your day so that you can focus only on the high level business tasks that will grow your business. Depending on the size, complexity, goals and resources of your business you can expect to receive 50, 60, 80 plus hours a month back into your schedule. Imagine gaining valuable hours in your day to focus only on what you can do to grow the business, while your operations and marketing management is being taken care of each day without you having to think about it. Stuff is getting done on time and on budget. Revenue is increasing because ideas and strategies are being developed and delivered through a strong infrastructure of team, systems and automation.
Believe it or not, that is a fear that most women business owners have that keeps them from hiring a business manager.
I compare this to feeling like you need to clean your house from top to bottom before the new maid arrives.
No judgements here!
Of course it feels like a mess. If it's like everyone one else at this point in your business - it is.
That's why you need help.
You've been heads down doing what is the important role in your business - building a business which generates revenue!
BTW....this is one of my many superpowers...
Bringing order out of chaos :). It's how I'm wired. That is what you need!
I love that you asked this question!
Believe it or not this is a major challenge for women business owners to know to what to delegate, feel comfortable delegating and what to keep.
The role of the Online Business Manager is to free up the business owner so that she can focus her time and energy on the things that only SHE can do to grow her business.
The type of business activities that you will free you to focus on that will immediately begin to accelerate your business:
These examples above are your return on investment in hiring a Second-in-Command.
Remember.... your team, led by your Second-in-Command, will implement your strategies for growth and see your goals to the finish line.
This is really something only you can decide. It’s hard, I know, I get it.
I am a business owner as well and I have a small team of my own.
For various reasons women find it next impossible to turn loose and trust another person with the business that they sacrificed and invested their heart and soul to grow.
For various reasons women find it next impossible to turn loose and trust another person with the business that they sacrificed and invested their heart and soul to grow.
At this point in the journey of your business growth you may need to step back in order to move forward. You will need to make the decision that you are done struggling and are ready to move forward or change your Vision of what you want to accomplish with the business.
The best way for you to get the speediest results is to be ready to allow me to step into management of your business without resistance.
If you miss meetings, do not respond to emails or requests to meet, micro-manage, refused to turn loose of certain management tasks and hold back important details and information I will need to manage and lead appropriately this begins to erode the relationship and our progress.
You'll realize a tremendous return on investment from Online Business Management services when you're able to step out of the manager's role and focus ONLY on what you can do to grow your business.
While you focus your energies on only what you can do to grow revenue as the Visionary leader and CEO, my focus as your Second-in-Command will be on implementing and delivering on those strategies and keeping you out of the day-to-day weeds management.
Return on investment is realized when revenue is growing, clients are served and happy, business operations and marketing are planned and systematized, the team is made up of people who are invested in helping your business grow, and you have your finger on the pulse of the business without having to be buried in the day-to-day.
Your activities directly grow the business. As your Second-in-Command, it's my role to ensure that your business grows and increases profit by working efficiently and effectively.
In reclaiming those hours you are able to focus on:
According to The Huffington Post, small business owners report that one extra hour in the day is worth more than $500. In other words, time is money.
My hiring an Online Business Manager and depending on the size of your business you would be releasing 40-80 plus hours plus each month. Your business manager practically pays for herself!
Yes, indeed, I get it.
Hiring an Online Business Manager is an investment in the growth of your business, yourself and future; one that can pay off big time.
Imagine your business generating $500,000 of new revenue with the support of an Online Business Manager wouldn’t it make perfect sense to pay for the support you need to generate that $500,000. In order for business to grow we must invest. It is just simple math.
It’s perfectly understandable that you would ask this question.
It is a question on many business owners minds and are typically afraid to ask.
We would need to discuss your business first. I don’t know anything about your business, needs, desires, goals and more just yet. Hiring an Online Business Manager is not expense; it is an investment in your success and business revenue growth. Online Business Managers will be a higher investment than a Virtual Assistant (different roles in your business), and the return on investment is higher.
