Use Your Team’s Kolbe A™ Results to Give Your Business an Extraordinary Advantage

The game of business is changing, and companies that can’t keep up will likely be left behind. As individuals, it’s even more critical we know who we are and what we can depend on in ourselves. In addition, we need to tap into our natural instincts to overcome challenges we face as individuals and companies. These instincts can be measured with an assessment tool called Kolbe A™.

As a Fractional Integrator, or sometimes titled a COO, one of my primary roles is to recruit, develop, and manage effective and high-functioning teams. Knowing our teams’ Kolbe A™ results is a powerful way to predict and align resources, solve problems, and make decisions in the organization.

As I mentioned above, the game of business is changing. We need to bring our best selves to the table to produce growth and make entrepreneurial visions come to life.

Business Woman Playing Chess

In December 2020, I added Kolbe Certified™ Consultant to the team development and productivity skills I bring to my clients and their teams.  A common question I hear is: how is Kolbe A™ different from the other personality tests business owners use?

The most popular personality tests are Myers-Briggs (MBTI), DiSC Assessment, Winslow, and The Enneagram. As they’re all valuable, I recommend using them to know yourself and your team on a deeper level.

However, Kolbe A™ is not a personality or intelligence test. Kolbe A™ is the only test available that measures the conative part of the brain that never changes. This is your natural instinct. Your natural wiring. The Kolbe A™ index reveals what you'll do when you're free to be yourself. There is no right or wrong here, because you’re perfect just the way you are.

A Little Peek into the Brain and Kolbe A™

Since my Kolbe A™ index result is 7-8-2-3, one of my natural instincts is to lay out information sequentially. So, let’s start with a little peek into the brain.

To begin, the brain has three parts: cognitive (thinking), affective (emotions), and conative (doing).

The conative or “doing” part has the striving instincts that drive a person’s natural way of taking action. It's also known as the modus operandi (MO). In other words, these are innate strengths and talents that remain unchanged from birth.

Everyone has an equal amount of conative energy for engaging the thinking (cognitive) and feeling (affective) parts of the mind to produce purposeful action.

Next, Kolbe predicts with accuracy how individuals naturally take action when they are free to be themselves. Instinct drives these action modes, not personality or IQ. Instincts aren't measurable, but the conative (doing) part of the brain is measurable by the Kolbe Index. Results are unbiased by gender, age, and race, and they don't change over time.

The Kolbe A™ Index has four action modes with three zones of operations in each mode. Plus, it measures each zone on a 10-unit scale.

Fact Finder

Fact Finder behavior is the instinctive way we gather and share information.

Follow Thru

Follow Thru behavior is the instinctive way we organize and design.

Quick Start

Quick Start behavior is the instinctive way we deal with risk and uncertainty.

Implementer

Implementer behavior is the instinctive way we handle space and tangibles.

Finally, an extra benefit of an individual knowing his or her Kolbe A™ index results is freedom. When individuals are free to operate within their natural instincts, they're more productive, more efficient, and happier. When sharing Kolbe A™ results with individuals, they often say it makes perfect sense. Also, they wish they'd known the results earlier.

What Happens Without Knowing Your Team’s Kolbe A™

Yes, team members can work outside their natural ways of taking action for short periods. However, when this time is prolonged, productivity, efficiency, and long-term satisfaction begin to drop. Of course, this is because they're working against their natural instincts. Burnout is possibly just around the corner.

Sometimes, a business owner or hiring manager may be perplexed and frustrated by inconsistent results from employees or team members. If owners or managers hire without knowing Kolbe results, they wonder how this person, who sold themselves as being highly detailed with exceptional follow-through skills, is dropping balls. Quickly, the company goes back to the hiring table to fill an open position.

When a business owner understands Kolbe™, they can build a successful team that greatly contributes to profit and success. Plus, a bonus to asking team members to take the Kolbe A™ is that you have the opportunity to as well. Knowing yourself is key to managing your team.

Kolbe Helps You Create the Culture You Want

Especially in entrepreneurial companies, business owners want to create strong team cultures to grow and scale their organizations. Of course, they understand the tremendous ROI (return on investment) of delegating to highly effective teams. Also, when team members are productive, efficient, and satisfied, owners can grow and scale profitable and meaningful companies.

Team members who have freedom to operate within their natural instincts are most likely to be satisfied with their roles. Thus, they’re more likely to stay with the company for the long haul.

Turnover creates a significant cost to companies, both in revenue and time. Entrepreneurial companies are hit even harder, especially in the early stages of small business growth. I experience and understand this fact only too well when I begin working with my clients.

Typically, when I first step into the Integrator role with my clients, the company is working through growing pains and usually alot of people and productivity challenges.  By learning the the teams individual Kolbe A™ results aides in moving the the right people into the right seats to bring about highest levels of productivity, communication and satisfaction in their roles; the result being organization growth.

Having our whole team take Kolbe Index empowered our organizational chart. Now when we hire, we do the Kolbe Index as part of the second step in our recruiting process.

In fact, I understand myself and others with compassion. As we set expectations for projects, we know who to put in charge.

Business life is better than ever!

Are you an individual who would like to take the Kolbe A™ and receive an interpretation of the results?  More and more companies are including the Kolbe A™ Index as a part of the process for building effective teams.
